GTA 6’s disc-free launch tests UK franchise networks

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on 19 November 2026 without a disc in its physical edition, Rockstar Games has confirmed, as the UK’s pre-owned games trade has shrunk to almost nothing. Game, once a roughly 300-shop chain, entered administration in January 2026 and closed its last standalone stores in April, leaving CeX as the specialist left to feel the effect.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is the best-selling game of all time in the UK, and Take-Two Interactive has said the series has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide. Grand Theft Auto 6 will retail at £69.99 for the standard edition and £89.99 for the ultimate edition, according to Currys, with pre-orders open since June. Rockstar’s own support pages state plainly that “the box contains a digital download code which you redeem on the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store,” with no Blu-ray disc included at launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Pre-owned specialists such as CeX have historically relied on a cycle in which a customer trades in a physical copy of a big release, the shop resells it, and the same disc changes hands again months later at a lower price. A digital download code cannot be resold once it has been redeemed, so a launch on the scale of Grand Theft Auto 6, arguably the most anticipated release of the decade, generates no equivalent second-hand stock for that cycle at all.

Good to know

A pre-owned retailer’s trade-in cycle depends on a physical object changing hands more than once. Accessories, consoles and controllers can still be traded in around a launch like this one, but a code-in-box edition removes the game itself from that cycle entirely, regardless of how successful the title turns out to be.

Game, under Frasers Group ownership since 2019, entered administration in January 2026, the second time in just over a decade, and closed its last three standalone shops, in Dudley, Lancaster and Sutton, in April 2026. The chain once ran around 300 UK stores; today, more than 200 Game concessions continue inside Sports Direct and House of Fraser, alongside its online store. Nick Arran, Game’s managing director until the closures, had already said that while collector’s editions retain value, “the category is expected to decline over time.”

CeX, verified as a genuine UK franchise through its own listing with the British Franchise Association rather than a franchise portal, states a start-up cost of £150,000 to £250,000 for a new store and encourages franchisees to expand, noting some run more than 20 shops each, well beyond what many UK franchises typically cost to open. The franchisor describes a network of more than 640 stores worldwide, with roughly half franchised. Rather than retreating, CeX has reportedly been opening stores dedicated to retro and import games in the UK, a different bet from Game’s retreat into concessions and online sales.

Neither Rockstar nor CeX has commented publicly on how a disc-free Grand Theft Auto 6 will affect UK trade-in volumes specifically. Peripheral spending, on consoles, controllers and subscriptions, remains open to pre-owned retailers regardless of format, but the game itself will not recirculate through second-hand shelves the way previous entries in the series did. Whether that dents CeX’s trading figures for the period, or whether a later physical disc release changes the picture, is not yet established.
