What is franchising?

Franchising is the best of both worlds: the independence of entrepreneurship and the strength of a network. A proven concept, tailored support, and shared expertise to help you launch faster and with greater confidence.

Frequently asked questions

Liquid capital, the unborrowed cash a franchisor expects, runs from around £15,000 to £150,000 across the brands listed here. Total investment is higher. Filter by contribution in our search tool.

On average, it takes 6 to 12 months between the first contact with the franchisor and the official opening of your location. This timeframe includes contract negotiations, site selection, training, and build-out work.

Most networks train franchisees from the ground up, whatever their background. Franchisors screen for business aptitude, available capital and willingness to follow the system as documented. Regulated sectors are the exception: care and childcare carry their own registration and named-manager requirements whatever the brand.

Cross-check the fit between your profile and the concept, the financial position of the network, and feedback from existing franchisees. The UK has no Franchise Disclosure Document and no statutory pre-contract disclosure, so nothing is filed for you to read. What you can check is the franchisor’s accounts at Companies House, the agreement itself reviewed by a solicitor, and what current and former franchisees tell you directly.

No. There is no franchise statute, no register and no regulator. A franchise agreement is governed by ordinary contract law, there is no statutory disclosure document and no cooling-off period. The British Franchise Association is a voluntary trade association whose code binds its own members, not the market, and a brand outside its membership is not acting unlawfully.

Most franchisees combine their own capital with a commercial loan, and several high street banks run dedicated franchise teams. Start Up Loans, delivered by a British Business Bank subsidiary, lends up to £25,000 per applicant at a fixed 7.5%, unsecured, capped at £100,000 per business. Lenders typically expect at least 30% of total set-up costs from your own funds.
