Iceland becomes first UK high street brand in Falklands

Iceland Foods will open a store in Stanley, the Falkland Islands’ capital, in early December 2026, becoming what it calls the first UK high street brand to trade in the British Overseas Territory. The retailer is partnering with local operator Kelper Stores, part of the Fortuna group, on the outlet, which Fortuna and Kelper Stores describe as Stanley’s first franchise store.

The store will trade from an address on Ross Road East in Stanley, stocking Iceland’s own-label frozen range alongside branded lines including Cathedral City and MyProtein, the kind of grocery and convenience offer that food and drink franchises recruiting in the UK also build their formats around. Richard Walker, executive chairman of Iceland, said he intends to travel to the Falklands to open the store in person.

James Wallace, managing director of Fortuna, and Sarah Clarke, general manager of Kelper Stores, both described the outlet as the first franchise store to open in Stanley, though Iceland’s own announcement referred to it simply as a new store rather than using the word franchise.

Richard Walker said: “Iceland Foods has a proud history of ‘firsts’ and we are proud to be backing Britain by becoming the first UK high street retailer to open in the Falkland Islands.” He called the opening “a huge moment for us.” James Wallace said Fortuna was “delighted” to partner with Iceland, adding that the store was expected to directly benefit the people of the Falklands, while Clarke said the opening was “a major milestone for the Falklands” that would broaden product choice for islanders.

Sarah Clarke described the new outlet as “the first ever franchise store to Stanley,” a characterisation echoed by Fortuna’s Wallace. Iceland’s own materials on the opening do not use the word franchise, referring instead to a partnership with Kelper Stores; the precise legal structure of the arrangement, whether a franchise agreement, a licence or a supply deal, has not been set out publicly.

Those are three different relationships, and what separates a franchise from the alternatives is covered in our guide to how franchising works in the UK. Iceland does not publish a franchise recruitment page for its UK high street stores, and this deal applies specifically to the Falklands rather than to any UK expansion route.

Good to know

The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic with a population of around 3,500 people, self-governing on most domestic matters while the UK handles defence and foreign affairs.

The Falklands’ small, isolated population has historically been served by a limited number of local retailers, with goods often shipped in from the UK or South America. Kelper Stores, an established family business in the islands, gives Iceland a partner with existing supply routes and local knowledge, rather than the retailer building its own logistics from scratch. The arrangement illustrates how some UK retailers extend into remote or overseas markets through a local operator rather than opening company-owned stores directly.

The Stanley store is due to open in early December 2026, with Walker planning to attend in person. Neither Iceland nor its partners have said whether the Falklands opening could be followed by further stores in other British Overseas Territories, and no financial terms of the partnership have been disclosed.

A local partner taking development rights across a whole territory is the structure known as a master franchise, though neither side has confirmed that is the arrangement here. For UK retailers watching how brands extend beyond the mainland, the Stanley opening offers an early test of demand in one of the smallest markets any major UK grocery brand has entered. Operators looking at a local partnership of their own can compare food and drink franchises recruiting in the UK.
