McDonald’s has confirmed 30 September 2026 as the opening date for its long-awaited drive-thru at St George’s Park, Newport, on the Isle of Wight. The restaurant sits within a retail park that has been in planning since 2019, and becomes the Island’s second McDonald’s alongside the existing St James’ Street restaurant.
The drive-thru sits on St George’s Way, part of the retail and leisure complex built on the former Newport Football Club ground. Island Echo reported on 16 September 2026 that the restaurant would open “exactly 2 weeks today”, placing the date at 30 September 2026.
Isle of Wight Council’s planning committee approved the wider scheme in October 2019, with the development covering six retail and leisure units and 289 parking spaces, and more than 28 conditions attached to the permission, including a three-year construction deadline.
A seven-year path from planning to opening
McDonald’s first submitted plans for the Newport drive-thru in 2018, covering the restaurant itself alongside separate applications for signage and the drive-thru layout. The scheme drew objections at the time over its potential impact on Newport’s independent retailers, before the planning committee granted approval the following year.
The retail park was also expected to bring Aldi and Wickes to the same site, alongside a playpark for customers. The seven-year gap between approval and opening reflects the pace of the wider retail park build-out rather than any single delay specific to McDonald’s own restaurant.

The Island’s second McDonald’s, and its franchise status
McDonald’s in the UK is overwhelmingly run by franchisees, and the Island’s existing restaurant on St James’ Street, Newport, has previously been reported as franchisee-operated. Whether the new St George’s Way drive-thru is run by the same franchisee or a different operator has not been disclosed, and neither the floor area nor the number of jobs the restaurant will create has been published, since no UK register records which outlets are franchised, as what a franchise is explains.
St George’s Park has already attracted a second drive-thru operator to the same complex, with a Costa Coffee unit also reported as part of the scheme, a roadside format now standard across the coffee franchises recruiting in the UK.
Good to know
McDonald’s does not publish a UK franchise fee or jobs figure for an individual restaurant opening. Franchise terms and site-level financial detail are agreed directly between the brand and its franchisee through the franchise agreement, and are not filed publicly with Companies House or any other UK register.
Other drive-thrus in the Island pipeline
Newport is not the only Isle of Wight location where McDonald’s has sought a drive-thru. Separate schemes at Cowes and at Lake, near Sandown, have been through their own planning processes over the past two years, with the Lake restaurant reported to have gained planning committee approval.
None of those sites has a confirmed opening date to match St George’s Way, and each depends on its own construction timeline before McDonald’s can confirm when it will trade. Together with the Newport opening, the three schemes point to a broader push by the brand and its franchisees to widen its footprint on the Island beyond the single long-standing restaurant in the county town, rather than a one-off addition.
