McDonald’s opens its third Darlington restaurant on 23 September 2026, a drive-thru on the Faverdale Industrial Estate that has slipped three times since construction began in March 2025. The brand has not named the operator, so whether the site joins its franchised estate or stays company-run is not established.
The restaurant sits on a roadside retail development at Faverdale, on the western edge of the town, and is a new site rather than a relocation. It joins two existing Darlington McDonald’s, on the North Road Industrial Estate and at Morton Park. The Northern Echo reported the confirmed date on 10 September 2026, after McDonald’s marked the build with a time-lapse construction video. Neither the floor area nor the number of roles created has been published, and the company has issued no figure for either.
A date confirmed after three revisions
Work started on the plot in March 2025, with a December 2025 opening in prospect. That moved to early 2026, then to late summer, before the brand settled on Wednesday 23 September 2026. McDonald’s has published no reason for the slippage. The date was confirmed through a time-lapse construction video posted by the brand rather than through a press release. The Northern Echo carried the confirmation 13 days before the doors open, and reported the same sequence of revised targets running back to the original December 2025 date.
Who runs it has not been stated
McDonald’s UK runs an open franchising programme and publishes an application route on its own site, where it states that “most new owners begin by investing to take over an established restaurant”, and that most go on to hold several sites over time. What it does not publish is which restaurants in the UK estate are franchisee-run, or what share of the estate that represents. No operator has been named for Faverdale. On the published record the site is a McDonald’s restaurant in Darlington, and nothing more specific than that.
Good to know
No UK register records which outlets trade under a franchise agreement. Companies House holds no franchised outlet count and no register of franchise agreements, so the operator of an individual restaurant is established only when the brand or the franchisee says so, a gap explained in what a franchise is.
Costa still to come on the same scheme
The Faverdale development was drawn up with three roadside brands: McDonald’s, Costa Coffee and Taco Bell. Costa Coffee is still down to open a drive-thru on the site, which would put two food-to-go operators on the same access road, a roadside format now used across the coffee franchises recruiting in the UK. Taco Bell did not proceed at Faverdale. It opened instead on North Road, in a unit that previously traded as KFC, which places it closer to the town centre and to the McDonald’s already trading on that industrial estate. No opening date has been published for the Costa drive-thru.
What would settle the operator question
Two disclosures would answer it. McDonald’s names the operator when a franchisee takes on a site and a local announcement follows, and a franchisee running a new restaurant in England normally trades through a limited company registered at Companies House, whose incorporation date and registered office are public. Neither has surfaced for Faverdale. The Costa Coffee unit on the same development carries the same open question and the same absence of a date. Until one of the two appears, the operator of Darlington’s third McDonald’s stays unstated on the public record.
