Alloy wheel refurbishment centres, run from a workshop and showroom in an exclusive territory

The Wheel Specialist refurbishes, repairs and customises alloy wheels, with powder-coated and diamond-cut finishes, wheel straightening and replacement tyres, for both retail customers and trade and corporate accounts. It grew out of Lap-Tab, a family motor services business founded in Birmingham in 1955. The Wheel Specialist brand was created in 2006, when the family decided to franchise, and the first franchised centre opened in Manchester in 2007.

The business is still family-run, with Ginny Murphy as chief executive and her son Jack Murphy as a director. Its consumer site lists 22 branches across England, Scotland and Wales, and the company says the network quoted more than £24 million of work in 2025.

A premises-based model, not a mobile service

Unlike mobile repairers, every franchisee operates from fixed premises of at least 1,500 sq ft, with a workshop and a customer showroom, and takes every wheel through a 15-stage refurbishment process. Each franchisee receives a large, exclusive territory mapped to local demographics, and the franchisor helps find and negotiate the premises.

No wheel refurbishment experience is required. Franchisees can structure the business around their strengths, from managing the team to working in the workshop, and the company says some have built and sold one centre before buying another territory. Opening takes around 10 to 12 weeks from signing, including a six-week fit-out and training period.
