Wingstop, one of the fastest-growing chicken wing chains in the United States with more than 2,100 franchise restaurants across 45 states, disclosed on August 26, 2026 that its Senior Vice President and Chief Brand and People Officer, Donnie Upshaw, is leaving the company. His departure takes effect on September 10, 2026. No successor has been announced.

Wingstop (NASDAQ: WING) operates a network of more than 2,100 restaurants primarily through franchisees, with the vast majority of its US locations independently owned and operated under franchise agreements. The brand has posted consistent unit growth in recent years and attracts sustained attention from institutional investors. Upshaw held one of the broadest leadership mandates at the company, with brand strategy, culture, and human resources unified under a single executive brief since January 2026.

Wingstop filed an 8-K with the Securities and Exchange Commission on August 26, informing investors of Upshaw’s planned exit. The filing stated that his departure “is not the result of any disagreement with the company or any matter relating to the company’s operations, policies, or practices.” The company has not publicly named a replacement, nor has it indicated whether the brand and people functions will be separated into two distinct senior roles once the transition takes place.

Donnie Upshaw joined Wingstop in April 2018 as Vice President of Human Resources. Over the following years he moved through a series of expanding positions: Senior Vice President of People, Chief People Officer, and then Chief People Officer combined with Senior Vice President of Corporate Restaurants. In January 2026 the company broadened his scope further, naming him Chief Brand and People Officer and assigning him responsibility for brand positioning, cultural strategy, and talent across the organization. The consolidation of brand and people under a single executive was described at the time as a deliberate structural choice by the chain’s leadership.

During his time in the combined role, Upshaw oversaw several initiatives aimed at deepening Wingstop’s cultural presence. Among the most prominent was House of Flavor, a marketing activation built around the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, which was held across multiple US host cities. He also led the development and rollout of Club Wingstop, a loyalty program the brand introduced to strengthen repeat engagement with its customer base. Both programs were presented by the company as core components of its growth and brand relevance strategy at the time of their respective launches.

For Wingstop’s franchisee network, which comprises the large majority of the chain’s 2,100-plus US locations, leadership transitions at the brand and people level carry tangible implications. Brand strategy decisions shape how national advertising fund resources are allocated, which promotional calendars franchisees are expected to follow, and how the system presents itself to consumers nationally. No hiring timeline has been communicated publicly. Wingstop had not issued additional statements on the matter as of August 27, 2026.
