An Ohio-based franchise operator has reached the top of the Arby’s restaurant franchise system. AES Restaurant Group, headquartered in Zionsville, completed an acquisition in October 2026 that makes it the single largest Arby’s franchisee in the world, according to a report published by QSR Magazine on October 27.
Founded in 2004 by CEO John Wade, AES Restaurant Group operates a portfolio of 344 Arby’s franchise restaurants across 20 states as of December 2025, holding the number-two position in the system behind Flynn Restaurant Group.
A 115-unit acquisition from Inspire Brands and a separate 40-unit purchase from Mosaic Management had placed AES within striking distance of the top spot. The October 2026 move, confirmed by QSR Magazine, appears to have closed that gap. Terms of the latest transaction had not been disclosed publicly as of October 27.
From 344 Units to Number One: A Methodical Expansion
AES’s growth in the Arby’s system followed a consistent pattern: identify available portfolios, conduct integration, then pursue the next acquisition. In 2025 alone, the Zionsville company made two significant purchases: 115 restaurants from Inspire Brands and 40 units from Mosaic Management, with Citizens Capital Markets and Advisory serving as financial adviser for the sellers.
A Wintrust-led banking syndicate, alongside Huntington and City National, financed successive rounds of growth. Between acquisitions, AES focused on operational integration in newly entered markets, a pattern Wade has described as foundational to the company’s approach.
A Consolidation Trend Reshaping QSR Franchise Ownership
The concentration of Arby’s franchise ownership in fewer, larger operators reflects a pattern documented across the quick-service restaurant sector. Flynn Restaurant Group, which previously held the leading position in the Arby’s system, manages more than 2,600 locations across brands including Applebee’s, Panera Bread, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, and Pizza Hut.
The emergence of multi-unit operators controlling hundreds of locations within a single brand has accelerated since 2020, as access to institutional capital and economies of scale have favored larger operators over smaller, independent franchisees. Franchise Times has tracked this consolidation in its annual Restaurant 200 ranking.

Density Over Reach: AES’s Stated Growth Philosophy
Despite reaching the top position in the Arby’s system, AES has consistently described its strategy as market-depth-oriented rather than nationally dispersed. In prior public commentary, Wade indicated the company prioritizes concentration within existing markets over geographic spread. The decision to pursue a new acquisition in 2026, after signaling a period of integration following the major 2025 purchases, suggests the company encountered a specific opportunity that matched its acquisition criteria.
Arby’s Restaurant Group operates approximately 3,500 restaurants in the United States and is present in more than 20 countries. The full terms of the October 2026 transaction had not been disclosed as of the date of this report.
