The youth enrichment franchise sector recorded a significant ownership change in late May 2026. Spark Harbor, a holding company focused on children’s activity brands, has acquired Bach to Rock, a music education franchise with 57 locations across the United States. The deal brings Bach to Rock into a portfolio already serving hundreds of thousands of young students through complementary activity-based concepts.
Cambridge Information Group, a private investment firm, originally acquired a single Bach to Rock location in Maryland in 2007 and spent nearly two decades developing the music education concept into a national franchise brand. Today, Bach to Rock offers music instruction for students from early childhood through adulthood, covering instruments, voice, recording, and performance. The franchise concept continues to expand, with 10 additional units cuFrrently under development, according to the brand’s official press release.
From a Single Maryland Studio to 57 Franchise Locations
Bach to Rock was founded in 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland, with a curriculum designed around the idea that students learn music more effectively when they play the songs they actually enjoy, from current pop to rock classics. The concept franchised and expanded steadily under Cambridge Information Group’s ownership. As of the acquisition announcement, the brand operates 57 schools across the country, with a development pipeline that includes 10 units in various stages of pre-opening.
Andy Snyder, CEO of Cambridge Information Group, noted the transition in a company statement: “CIG acquired a single Bach to Rock site in 2007 and helped build the company into the top-tier national franchisor it is today. We are excited about Spark Harbor’s vision for the brand and their ideal stewardship of Bach to Rock’s next chapter.”
Spark Harbor’s Growing Portfolio of Children’s Activity Brands
Spark Harbor already operates two other youth activity franchises. Water Babies, a baby and toddler swim school franchise, has grown to more than 600 locations worldwide. USA Ninja Challenge, which offers youth obstacle course and fitness training, currently runs more than 50 locations across the United States. Bach to Rock joins that portfolio as the company’s third brand, extending its reach into arts and music education.
Jeff Phillips, Founding CEO of Spark Harbor, described the rationale behind the acquisition in the press announcement: “Bach to Rock has developed exactly what we look for: a curriculum that keeps students coming back year after year, a franchisee base that believes in the model, and schools that provide a third place for kids to find community and confidence. We are bringing operator experience and franchise development expertise to accelerate growth and reach more families across the country.”
What the Acquisition Means for the Music Education Franchise Sector
Music and arts education franchises occupy a growing segment within the broader youth enrichment market. Programs that offer consistent, structured instruction outside of school hours have attracted franchise investment as families continue to prioritize extracurricular activities. Bach to Rock’s membership-oriented model, where students typically enroll in recurring weekly lessons, generates recurring revenue that franchise investors often find structurally appealing.
The transition from a private equity-backed owner to a purpose-built multi-brand holding company is a pattern seen across several franchise categories in recent years. Spark Harbor’s focus on youth activity brands suggests a strategy of cross-pollination between concepts, whether through shared infrastructure, development expertise, or operational systems. The brand’s 10-unit development pipeline indicates near-term expansion activity is already underway, independent of the ownership change.
