Health-focused fast-casual brand Sweetgreen is entering Utah for the first time, opening a 3,160-square-foot location in Salt Lake City’s Sugar House neighborhood on September 8, 2026. The chain operates all of its more than 230 US restaurants under a corporate model and does not offer franchise opportunities to the public.
Founded in Washington, D.C. in 2007, Sweetgreen has built a national network of company-owned restaurants centered on chef-crafted salads, warm bowls, and protein-forward plates made with fresh, daily-prepped ingredients.
The brand went public in November 2021 and has since pursued measured geographic expansion, entering new states one market at a time. Utah is its latest addition, following recent entries into markets across the South and Mountain West.
Salt Lake City: Location, Opening Week, and Community Partnerships
The new restaurant is located at 2188 Highland Drive, Suite 103, in the Sugar House neighborhood, a mixed-use residential and retail corridor on the east side of Salt Lake City. The location will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
A grand opening week runs from September 8 through September 12, featuring a community run organized with Salt Lake City Run Club, a soda float bar in collaboration with OLIPOP and Utah dairy brand The Creamery, and an arts pop-up with Craft Club SLC.
The interior will display an original large-scale painting by multidisciplinary artist Jason Hackenwerth, installed directly on the wall. On opening day, Sweetgreen plans to donate one meal for every meal purchased to WasteLess Solutions, a Utah nonprofit that addresses food insecurity across the state.
Sweetgreen Operates a Corporate Model: No Franchise Opportunities Available
Entrepreneurs may wonder, “Can I open a Sweetgreen restaurant?” However sweetgreen does not offer franchise agreements and has not done so at any point in its history. All restaurant locations are company-owned and operated, with expansion decisions made at the corporate level. Real estate selection, site development, and staffing are handled internally.
Entrepreneurs and investors who search for Sweetgreen franchise opportunities will not find a traditional franchising program through the brand. The Sugar House location is being served through a supply partnership with Nicholas and Company, a family-owned foodservice distributor that has operated in Utah for nearly four generations.
Menu, Loyalty Program, and Fall Offerings
The Salt Lake City restaurant carries Sweetgreen‘s full menu of salads, warm bowls, wraps, and protein plates, including new additions introduced as part of the brand’s fall 2026 menu: the Autumn Harvest Bowl, a Maple Glazed Salmon plate, and Roasted Bacon Brussels as a side. Returning fan favorites include the Crispy Rice Bowl and the Miso Glazed Salmon.
Guests can order in-restaurant, online, or through the Sweetgreen app. The brand’s SG Rewards loyalty program awards 10 points per eligible dollar spent, which members can redeem for personalized offers and free menu items.
Sweetgreen’s National Expansion Context
The fast-casual salad segment has seen broad geographic expansion over the past five years, with brands like Sweetgreen, Saladworks, and Crisp and Green opening in markets that were previously underserved by health-oriented quick-service concepts.
Sweetgreen’s approach has consistently favored deliberate market entry over rapid growth, with local supplier partnerships and community activation programs accompanying each new opening. The Utah launch follows the brand’s established pattern of building community relationships before and during the opening period rather than relying on promotional discounts alone.
