The US chicken finger segment is drawing strong investor interest in 2026, and Layne’s Chicken Fingers is one of the brands at the center of that momentum. The Texas-born franchise brand closed the first half of the year with more than 50 units open, 24 new franchise agreements signed, and a landmark 12-unit deal that marks its debut in California.

Founded in Frisco, Texas, Layne’s Chicken Fingers has been building its franchise system steadily since opening its first location in 1994. The brand earned spots on several 2026 franchise rankings during the first quarter, signaling growing recognition beyond its home state. By the close of the second quarter, the network crossed the 50-unit operating threshold — a milestone widely cited in the industry as the point at which a franchise moves from emerging concept to established system.

According to a press release published July 21, 2026, the brand signed 24 franchise agreements and surpassed 50 operating restaurants by the end of June. The agreements span multiple markets, reflecting demand from both new franchisees and operators already in the system. “We’ve added dozens of units to the pipeline this year, and we’ve also opened a significant number,” said Garrett Reed, CEO of Layne’s Chicken Fingers. “The energy is so cool. I’ve been in this industry for 30-plus years, and the journey I’ve had with Layne’s has been unique.”

Among the agreements signed in Q2, a 12-unit deal with experienced IHOP operators stands out as the brand’s first formal entry into California. The partnership brings multi-unit franchising expertise to a market known for competitive dining conditions and high consumer spending. Layne’s had previously concentrated its footprint in Texas and neighboring states; the California agreement represents a westward pivot that extends its geographic reach considerably.

Earlier in 2026, the brand had already awarded locations in Sacramento, Fresno, and other markets as part of a Q1 push that saw more than 50 restaurants awarded. The Q2 California deal builds on that trajectory, adding a high-profile coastal market to a pipeline that now extends into multiple regions.

In franchise development circles, the 50-unit milestone is commonly associated with a shift in brand credibility: lenders, real estate brokers, and prospective franchisees often treat it as a sign of operational stability. For Layne’s, reaching that figure while simultaneously closing two dozen new agreements suggests the brand’s recruitment pipeline remains active. The combination of new franchise signings and operating unit growth points to a system that is expanding on both fronts at the same time.

The chicken finger category has seen sustained interest from franchisee investors over the past several years, with competitors such as Raising Cane’s and Slim Chickens having grown into large national systems. Layne’s, with its Texas heritage and smaller current footprint, is positioning itself within that same consumer appetite for a focused, quality-driven menu format.

With more than 50 stores under development alongside the operating network, the brand’s second half of 2026 is expected to include additional openings. Reed has indicated that lease executions are ongoing, which typically precede restaurant openings by several months. The pace of franchise agreement signings observed in the first two quarters suggests the development team is maintaining a consistent velocity heading into the fall.
