The Concept

Wendy’s is a U.S. quick-service restaurant (QSR) franchise brand specializing in hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, fries, breakfast, salads, chili and its signature Frosty desserts. Founded by Dave Thomas in 1969, the first Wendy’s opened in Columbus, Ohio. The brand differentiates itself around fresh food, made-to-order hamburgers and its square hamburger patties.

Wendy’s operates predominantly through franchising. At the end of 2025, the system had 7,397 restaurants worldwide, including 5,969 U.S. restaurants. Of the U.S. restaurants, 5,546 were operated by franchisees and 423 by the company, meaning roughly 93% of U.S. restaurants were franchised. Globally, approximately 95% of the Wendy’s system was franchise-operated.

The franchise model is aimed primarily at experienced restaurant operators with the financial capacity to develop multiple locations. Wendy’s provides franchisees with operational support, training, marketing, restaurant-design assistance and site-selection support. The company is also using its Build-to-Suit development fund and new restaurant formats to reduce the capital barrier in selected markets.

Frequently Asked Questions

A new Wendy’s restaurant generally requires an estimated $2 million to $3.7 million in total investment. The final amount depends heavily on real estate, construction, restaurant format, building specifications and local development costs.

In addition, the standard franchise fee is $50,000 per restaurant, while applicants pay a $5,000 post-approval application fee and $500 background-check fee per person. Wendy’s also requires franchisees to have substantial financial resources before entering the system.

Wendy’s reported $1.984 million in average annual unit volume for U.S. franchised restaurants in 2025. The figure represents sales at franchised restaurants and declined from $2.086 million in 2024.

This should not be confused with franchisee profit. Labor, food, occupancy, utilities, insurance, royalties, advertising, maintenance, debt service and other expenses must be deducted from sales to determine the actual economic performance of an individual restaurant.

Wendy’s currently lists 4%–6% of gross sales for royalties, depending on the restaurant asset type and market. Its current U.S. franchise information lists an additional 4% of gross sales for advertising.

Wendy’s can also offer development incentives from time to time that temporarily reduce royalty rates or advertising contributions. Prospective franchisees should therefore review the specific franchise agreement and current FDD for the market they intend to develop.

At the end of 2025, Wendy’s operated 7,397 restaurants worldwide, including 5,969 restaurants in the United States. Approximately 95% of the global system was operated by franchisees.

The system had already changed by June 2026, when Wendy’s reported 7,180 restaurants, including 5,724 U.S. locations. The fluctuation reflects ongoing closures, openings and portfolio optimization under the company’s Project Fresh strategy.

Wendy’s strongly prefers experienced restaurant or hospitality operators, particularly candidates with QSR experience. The company says ideal franchisees have proven leadership skills, strong business acumen, local market knowledge and an interest in multi-unit growth.

Wendy’s also requires a prospective franchisee to submit a three- to five-year business plan that includes a skilled operator and management team dedicated to developing and operating the restaurants. This makes Wendy’s a considerably more demanding opportunity than many single-unit franchise concepts.
