Pizza Hut is entering private equity ownership without the executive who led it through its sale. Aaron Powell, the brand’s global CEO since August 2021, announced his departure as the chain’s transfer to LongRange Capital approaches its final steps. The deal assigns Pizza Hut’s non-China operations to the private equity firm for $1.5 billion, part of a broader $2.7 billion divestiture by Yum! Brands.

With more than 15,500 restaurants across 108 countries and approximately $10 billion in annual system-wide sales, Pizza Hut is one of the world’s largest pizza franchise networks. Pizza Hut has built its global presence through a franchise model that enables franchisees to operate restaurants under a common brand and business system.

Yum! Brands launched a formal strategic review of the chain in November 2024, citing sustained pressure on domestic sales and market share. In June 2026, two definitive sale agreements were announced simultaneously: LongRange Capital would acquire the non-China business for $1.5 billion, while Yum China agreed to a separate transaction for the Chinese operations. The Yum China portion of the deal closed earlier in August 2026.

Aaron Powell joined Pizza Hut as global CEO in August 2021, bringing more than a decade of consumer goods experience from Kimberly-Clark’s Asia-Pacific division, along with earlier roles at Bain & Company and Procter & Gamble. In March 2024, he expanded his responsibilities to include direct oversight of the U.S. business after President David Graves departed for Arby’s. Powell disclosed his decision through a LinkedIn post in mid-August 2026, noting that LongRange Capital had offered him a position within the reorganized company. He declined the offer, describing the business as better positioned than when he arrived.

No replacement has been named publicly.

The combined $2.7 billion transaction ranks among the most significant restaurant franchise deals of 2026. LongRange Capital, headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, describes its investment approach as “customer-centric and operationally-oriented,” with a stated emphasis on long-term ownership.

Bob Berlin, Founder and Managing Partner of LongRange, said the firm is committed to working with Pizza Hut’s “franchise partners to drive its next phase of growth through investments that deliver consistently great food and experiences for customers around the world.” For the more than 6,500 Pizza Hut franchisees operating in the United States, the shift from a publicly traded parent company to private equity ownership introduces a new corporate counterpart at a moment when the brand has been working to stabilize domestic comparable sales following years of market share erosion.

The LongRange acquisition of Pizza Hut’s non-China operations was scheduled to close in Q3 2026 under the terms announced in June. With the Yum China transaction already finalized, the remaining step is the completion of LongRange’s purchase. Neither LongRange Capital nor Yum! Brands has disclosed a candidate for the CEO role, nor indicated a timeline for the appointment.

Under U.S. franchise regulations, a change of control typically triggers an obligation to update the brand’s Franchise Disclosure Document, a process that generally takes several months to complete. Franchise agreements and system operations at Pizza Hut’s U.S. locations are expected to continue under their existing terms through the transition.
