The Concept

Kiddie Academy is an educational childcare franchise offering early learning and daycare for children from infancy through school age. Founded in 1981, the company combines childcare with its proprietary Life Essentials® curriculum, which focuses on character, confidence, curiosity, connection, critical thinking and creative expression. The first franchise opened in 1992, and the system has since expanded across the United States.

The business model is based on purpose-built or converted childcare academies operated by franchise owners. Franchisees receive support with site selection, academy development, training, marketing and operations. Kiddie Academy says it now has more than 360 Academy locations operating in 39 states and Washington, D.C.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2026 FDD estimates $590,000 to $1.01 million for the leased-academy scenario. A franchisee who purchases land and develops a new academy faces a substantially higher investment. The initial franchise fee ranges from $70,000 to $150,000, depending on the applicable franchisee program.

The capital requirement makes Kiddie Academy a significantly larger investment than home-based childcare or small preschool concepts. Real estate, construction and enrollment ramp-up are major factors in the overall financial commitment.

The 2026 FDD reports average gross revenue of $2.19 million for 293 mature academies open for at least 24 months. The median was approximately $2.08 million.

These figures represent gross revenue rather than owner profit. Labor, occupancy, insurance, supplies, debt service and other operating expenses must be deducted before determining the franchisee’s actual earnings.

The standard royalty is 7% of gross revenue, with an additional 2% brand/marketing contribution.

Because childcare is highly labor-intensive, prospective franchisees should evaluate these fees alongside staffing costs, rent and expected enrollment rather than considering the royalty rate in isolation.

The latest FDD reports 364 total outlets, including 363 franchised academies and one company-owned location. The brand operates in approximately 40 states including Washington, D.C.

That puts Kiddie Academy firmly in the mid-sized-to-large range among U.S. childcare franchises.

Kiddie Academy’s franchise model is designed to provide owners with a proven operating system, curriculum and support infrastructure. Its franchisee network includes people coming from a range of professional backgrounds. The owner nevertheless needs to build a strong management team and comply with all applicable state childcare licensing requirements.
