The 2026 edition of the Franchise Times Top 400, the most closely watched annual ranking in the US franchise industry, places McDonald’s at the top among franchise brands, with $139.4 billion in global systemwide sales across 45,356 locations. The ranking covers all franchise categories and reflects a year in which the US franchise sector as a whole is projected to exceed $920 billion in economic output, according to the International Franchise Association.

Published annually by Franchise Times following a five-month research process, the Top 400 ranks the largest US-based franchise systems by total global systemwide sales. The 2026 edition was released on September 30 and draws on sales and unit figures provided by or verified against franchise disclosure documents, publicly filed reports, and brand-level data. The ranking is widely referenced as a benchmark within the industry by franchisees evaluating prospective brands and by operators tracking competitive positioning.

McDonald’s retains the #1 position with $139.4 billion in global systemwide sales and 45,356 locations worldwide. 7-Eleven ranks second with $104.9 billion across 86,939 locations, the largest unit count of any brand in the ranking.

KFC takes third at $36.4 billion (33,897 locations), followed by Burger King at $29.4 billion (19,900 locations). The fifth position belongs to Chick-fil-A, with $24.8 billion in sales generated by just 3,320 locations, a per-unit productivity figure that stands apart from every other top-five brand. In comparison, 7-Eleven’s $104.9 billion is spread across more than 26 times as many units.

Outside the restaurant sector, RE/MAX ranked #1 in real estate franchising for the 18th consecutive year, placing 14th overall in the Top 400. That consistency reflects the brand’s global network scale and its position as a reference point for entrepreneurs evaluating real estate franchise models.

The 2026 Top 400 spans all major franchise categories including automotive, business services, health and wellness, retail, and lodging, providing a cross-sector view of which brands have achieved the greatest commercial scale.

The IFA projects that US franchise economic output will exceed $920 billion in 2026, up from $907.2 billion in 2025, with total franchise units expected to reach approximately 850,000 and employment nearing 8.9 million jobs nationwide. Growth, however, is not evenly distributed: the retail franchise category leads all sectors at a projected +6.3%, while quick-service restaurants and automotive are among the slowest-growing at approximately +0.5% each, reflecting margin pressure on restaurant operators and competitive saturation in QSR. The Southwest and Southeast regions are expected to post the strongest franchise unit and employment growth in 2026, with Texas projecting the highest individual state unit increase at +2.6%.
