Choose the services and the staffing model<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A nail salon is staffed in one of three ways: employed technicians on wages, self-employed technicians renting a desk and serving their own clients, or both. HMRC&#8217;s guidance for hair and beauty, published on 9 May 2025, judges status from working practice, not the contract: who sets hours and prices, who provides the clients, who the client pays and who supervises. Adverts on the government&#8217;s Find a Job service show both models in use: salons offering a nail bar for rent to a self-employed technician offering gel polish, BIAB and extensions, and salons employing technicians at \u00a38.60 to \u00a313 an hour depending on experience in 2025, often starting on two or three days a week and building up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Owners who have opened a nail salon describe the same route in: years in busy salons first, then a studio built around a niche, from detailed nail art to clients who find conventional salons overwhelming. Ownership also means juggling staff, stock, HMRC, the landlord, insurance and a broken pipe on the same day, so the first test of the plan is whether the business can run when the owner is away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Check the right to work position<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nail bars are one of the sectors the Home Office names when it reports illegal working enforcement. Its figures, released on 13 January 2026, recorded a record 12,791 visits in 2025 to businesses including nail bars, car washes, barbers and takeaways, and figures published in December 2024 showed its Operation Tornado had made 235 visits to nail bars and convenience stores, with 154 arrests. The Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority has also published modern slavery cases involving nail bars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From <strong>1 October 2026<\/strong>, the right to work scheme covers workers and individual subcontractors as well as employees, so technicians paid by the salon to serve its clients, whatever their contract says, are likely in scope, while genuinely self-employed desk renters serving their own clients fall outside it.
