Fortress now wants only part of the estate, which leaves around 12,000 jobs and roughly 600 shops facing an uncertain outcome.

Poundland has been owned since 2025 by Gordon Brothers, which bought it from Pepco for £1. A court-approved restructuring has since cut the estate from about 800 shops to about 600 across the UK and Ireland, around 530 of them in the UK. The owner has now put the chain up for sale, and on 13 October Poundland confirmed it was in talks with potential buyers.

Poundland is a company-managed chain, not a franchise network, so a sale decides the future of every shop at once, unlike the networks recruiting operators in the UK, where each site has its own owner.

Fortress narrows its offer to part of the estate

According to Sky News, which first reported the move, Fortress Investment Group has dropped its bid for the whole of Poundland and submitted a revised offer for between 200 and 250 shops. TheBusinessDesk reports that a deal on that basis would most likely be completed through a pre-pack administration, a procedure in which the sale of part of a business is agreed before administrators are appointed and completed immediately after. On 14 October, no notice of appointment of administrators for Poundland had been published in The Gazette, the official record of UK insolvency notices.

One bidder still pursuing a solvent deal

Martin Property Group, an Irish property company and the preferred partner of Poundland’s management team, is the only bidder reported to be seeking a solvent deal for the whole business. The other suitors want smaller groups of shops, so a break-up of the estate remains possible. A management buy-out has also been attempted, according to the Herald, but offers have so far been turned down.

Bally Auluk, national officer at shopworkers’ union Usdaw, said: “it is an absolute disgrace that Gordon Brothers has failed to engage with us”. He added that company sources had told him “a decision about the future of Poundland could be made as early as tomorrow”.

Trading had been improving before the sale process

The pressure on the owner comes despite better trading figures. Poundland reported like-for-like sales up 3.3% in its latest quarter and up 9.8% in the first week of its new financial year. The chain expects 2026 sales to be more than 3% higher than in 2025, and Barry Williams, managing director of Poundland, said the growth showed its recovery plan “is working”.

For landlords and shopping centre owners, the number of shops a buyer takes on will decide how many units return to the market, including to the food and drink brands recruiting UK operators that compete for the same high street sites.

What happens next

Three outcomes are on the table: a solvent sale of the whole business to Martin Property Group, a pre-pack sale of part of the estate to Fortress, or a split between several buyers. Any appointment of administrators would be published as a notice in The Gazette, which will set out the procedure used and the insolvency practitioners appointed. Poundland trades as Dealz in the Republic of Ireland, where any process would follow Irish insolvency law rather than the UK regime.

Poundland moved closer to an insolvency process on 13 October 2026, after Fortress Investment Group, the owner of rival discounter Poundstretcher, withdrew its offer for the whole business.
