Anyone can open a car garage to repair those cars. Testing them needs DVSA authorisation, and making money from either depends on the labour rate.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No licence, registration or qualification is required to repair vehicles for money in the UK. An MOT, by contrast, may only be carried out at premises the DVSA has authorised, by a tester it has qualified, at a price the government caps. That split runs through the whole business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1\">What is a car repair business?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A car repair business, known in the UK as a car garage, services and repairs vehicles for payment from a workshop, earning mainly from labour hours sold and a margin on parts, and in Great Britain it may also test them if the DVSA has authorised the site as a vehicle testing station. Its income is set by three numbers: the hourly labour rate, the share of paid hours its technicians actually sell, and how many MOTs turn into repair work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What a garage business typically sells:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Car servicing and routine maintenance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MOT testing, where the garage holds authorisation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diagnostics and fault finding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brakes, clutches, exhausts, batteries and tyres<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bodyshop work: paintwork, dents, scratches and alloy wheel repair<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Air conditioning and electric vehicle servicing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why the trade divides into garages that hold an MOT authorisation and garages that do not, and why it is treated as an asset rather than a formality. Decide whether the garage will test<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An MOT bay must meet a published layout and equipment standard before the DVSA authorises it, and retrofitting one into a unit chosen for other reasons is expensive. The test itself earns little at a capped fee; its value is that it brings every customer car onto the ramp once a year and produces a list of faults. Authorisation is also closely policed: DVSA figures reported by Garage Wire show 145 authorised examiners and 288 testers had their authorisation withdrawn in 2025\/26, out of 23,092 private testing stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Pick a specialism before a unit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A car garage that takes whatever comes through the door takes the unprofitable jobs too. Ryan Ginifer, a master technician with 19 years running his own business, told Garage Wire that he used to judge the business by the bank balance at month end and accept any work. Since buying William Street Motors in Cleethorpes, he specialises in VW, Audi and Mercedes and competes with main dealers for that work. Common specialisms include a marque group, diagnostics, air conditioning, hybrids and EVs, or fleet and van work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Find a unit that works for a workshop<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Planning use<\/strong>: a unit already in lawful use for vehicle repair is the simplest start; otherwise the council confirms whether a change of use needs permission before a lease is signed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Space for cars, not just ramps<\/strong>: vehicles waiting for parts, collection or a retest need somewhere to stand, and a unit with ramps but no parking caps the work it can hold<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Catchment over visibility<\/strong>: William Street Motors is hidden from passers-by but sits in a densely populated residential area, and Ginifer says long-standing residents did not know it existed until the website went live<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Power and drainage<\/strong>: ramps, compressors and diagnostic kit need an adequate supply, and oil and wash water need interceptors and drainage the lease allows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Calculate the labour rate from overheads<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andy Savva, a garage business coach known as The Garage Inspector, told Garage Wire in 2024 that of the garages he had worked with over five years, only two had fully calculated their overheads and set a profitable hourly rate from them. The common alternative is matching the rate of the car garage down the road. Labour is standard-rated for VAT at 20% once the garage is registered.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every hour a technician spends waiting for parts, answering the phone or redoing a job raises that figure, which is why workshop efficiency matters as much as the rate itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Open parts accounts and write a parts policy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parts come from motor factors on trade accounts, often with several deliveries a day, and the margin on them is the second income line after labour. Customer-supplied parts are a recurring source of disputes over fit and warranty, so many garages set a written policy: declining them, or fitting them at labour cost with no warranty on the part. Parts networks also sell membership: the Eurorepar Car Service network, backed by the Distrigo parts business and its 95-plus sites, passed 300 member garages in 2025 with no franchise
