From a modest beginning with eight Applebee\u2019s restaurants in Seattle in 1999, Greg Flynn has built what is today the world\u2019s largest franchise operation. As Founder, Chairman and CEO of Flynn Group, he oversees a $5 billion business spanning more than 2,900 restaurants and fitness centres across 44 US states and three countries. Yet for Flynn, scale has never been an end in itself \u2014 it is a tool for building opportunity. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From real estate to franchising <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Flynn\u2019s path into franchising<\/strong> was anything but conventional<\/strong>. Trained initially in real estate<\/strong>, his first exposure to restaurants came through an investment <\/strong>in a Stanford classmate\u2019s concept, World Wrapps. The experience proved<\/strong> formative<\/strong>. \u201cI realised I  was playing this business the wrong way,\u201d Flynn later reflected. \u201cI should be a  franchisee.<\/strong>\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That insight led him to acquire eight Applebee\u2019s locations<\/strong> in 1999 \u2014 a move that would define his career.<\/strong> Flynn quickly recognised franchising as a uniquely scalable model<\/strong>: lower risk than independent ownership, backed by strong brands <\/strong>that attract customers, employees and lenders alike. It was the foundation upon which Flynn  Group\u2019s expansion<\/strong> would be built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A deliberate strategy of scale <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For more than a decade<\/strong>, Flynn focused exclusively on Applebee\u2019s<\/strong>, honing operational excellence<\/strong> before broadening the portfolio. In 2011, the group adopted a multi-brand strategy<\/strong>, acquiring Taco Bell, Panera Bread, Arby\u2019s, Pizza Hut, Wendy\u2019s<\/strong> and, more  recently, Planet Fitness<\/strong>. The result is a diversified platform spanning casual dining, fast casual, quick service and fitness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Flynn Group employs more than 75,000 people <\/strong>and operates close to 3,000 units<\/strong>. According to Flynn, scale itself <\/strong>is a competitive advantage. \u201cThere are very clear scale economies in this business,\u201d he explains. \u201cThe more you grow,<\/strong> the more scale economies are available to you<\/strong> \u2014 in every way.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brand selection<\/strong>, however, remains disciplined. Flynn Group<\/strong> has historically focused on what Flynn calls \u201cpremier brands\u201d<\/strong>: proven concepts with decades of performance across economic cycles<\/strong>, high brand awareness and strong franchise economics.<\/strong> \u201cOur brands also need to be places where it\u2019s attractive to be a franchisee<\/strong>,\u201d he notes \u2014 a  filter that has guided every major acquisition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n
