Jamba, the smoothie franchise chain<\/a> owned by GoTo Foods, terminated, did not renew, or reacquired 130 franchise agreements<\/a> over a three-year period ending in 2026, according to figures published in the brand’s current Franchise Disclosure Document<\/a>. The termination rate is more than four times that of direct competitor Tropical Smoothie Cafe over the same period.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jamba operates approximately 710<\/strong> locations as of year-end 2025, with roughly half of its system concentrated in California. The brand, formerly known as Jamba Juice, is part of GoTo Foods<\/strong>, a multi-brand portfolio company backed by private equity firm Roark Capital Group<\/strong> that also includes Carvel, Cinnabon, Auntie Anne’s, and Jamba. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the 130<\/strong> outlets that left the system since early 2023, 116<\/strong> were formal terminations, 13<\/strong> were non-renewals, and one ceased operations for other reasons. Over the same period, the brand recorded 126<\/strong> franchise transfers and opened 104<\/strong> new locations, resulting in a net reduction of approximately 28<\/strong> stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Termination Rate That Significantly Exceeds Sector Benchmarks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The scale of Jamba’s terminations stands out when compared to comparable beverage-focused franchise systems<\/a>. Tropical Smoothie Cafe<\/strong>, which operates a larger U.S. footprint, recorded 28<\/strong> terminations over the same three-year period. Planet Smoothie<\/strong> recorded four<\/strong>. Jamba’s own FDD includes a disclosure that the brand “could be a higher-risk investment than a franchise in a system with a lower turnover rate,” language required under federal franchise disclosure rules when termination figures exceed regulatory thresholds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brand’s 2025 net loss of 17<\/strong> locations, reflecting nearly 50<\/strong> closures partially offset by new openings, was the most concentrated single-year reduction in recent years. California, where Jamba has historically been strongest, saw a net reduction of 38<\/strong> stores.<\/p>\n\n\n
