Chipotle Mexican Grill<\/em> has opened its first restaurant in Asia, launching in Seoul, South Korea, on September 2, 2026. The brand, which operates more than 3,700<\/strong> restaurants worldwide under a corporate model entered South Korea through a joint venture with Sangmidang Holdings<\/strong>. Seoul is the starting point for a planned broader expansion across Asia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in Denver, Colorado in 1993, Chipotle<\/strong> has never offered franchise opportunities <\/a>at any point in its history. The brand operates exclusively through a company-owned model in every market where it is present, including its international locations in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International expansion has taken the form of direct corporate ownership or, in select markets, joint ventures with established local partners. South Korea marks the brand’s first entry into Asia and its first joint-venture structure in the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Seoul Launch: Location, Partnership, and Operations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first Korean location opened at 423 Gangnam-daero, Seocho-gu<\/strong>, in Seoul’s Gangnam district. It is operated through a joint venture called S&C Restaurants Holdings, a co-ownership structure between Chipotle<\/strong> and Sangmidang Holdings<\/strong>, formerly known as SPC Group, a major South Korean food and beverage conglomerate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the agreement, Sangmidang Holdings manages day-to-day restaurant operations, including ingredient sourcing, staff training, and service execution. The South Korean menu includes burritos, bowls, tacos, quesadillas, and salads built around the same core ingredients used in US locations. Two additional Seoul locations are planned before the end of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n
